Finnish President Halonen presented the prize of 1 million euros and the prize named "Peak" to the blue light-emitting diode inventor and Japanese professor Nakamura Shuji at the 2006 "Millennium Technology Awards" ceremony held in Helsinki on the 8th. .

Nakamura Shuji was confirmed by the Finnish Technology Awards Foundation on June 15 this year as the winner of the Millennium Technology Award. The Foundation believes that the invention of Nakamura Shuji has opened up a new era in the field of LED research and development. His invention made it possible to produce industrially energy-efficient blue light-emitting diodes on a large scale, which has played a positive role in improving and improving the quality of life of human beings.

Nakamura Shuji is a technician of Japan Nichia Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. In 1990, he developed blue high-brightness LEDs. At that time, red and green light-emitting diodes were developed in the world, but since no blue light-emitting diodes were developed, various colors could not be fully exhibited by electronic display devices. Therefore, blue LEDs are considered to be the most difficult and hottest R&D projects in the world at the time. Nakamura Shoji, who has a master's degree in electronics engineering, has taken the liberty to fill this gap, making the color of computers, mobile phones, and ultra-thin TV screens richer, and the life of components is greatly extended, reducing power consumption by 90%.

According to reports, Nakamura was born in Japan in 1954. Since 2000, he has worked at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

The Millennium Technology Award is the highest-paid technology award ever awarded in the world, and is awarded every two years to recognize individuals or research groups that have made significant achievements in research or invention. The Finnish Technology Awards Foundation awards that award-winning scientific research and inventions should directly improve and enhance the quality of human life and have a positive impact on the sustainable development of the economy.

This year is the second time that the Finnish Technology Awards Foundation has awarded the “Millennium Technology Award”. The first "Millennium Technology Award" was awarded to the British inventor Tim Berners-Lee in 2004.
