Recently, 23 on-board millimeter wave surveying and mapping radars of the China Aerospace Science and Industry Second Institute won the first 1:5000 scale image in the mountainous areas of western Chengdu. The domestic surveying and mapping market has for the first time captured the images mapped by the onboard millimeter wave surveying radar. The first commercial performance of the radar was a success.

Geo-mapping is a long-term task in the country. Geomatics research measures the geometrical distribution of natural shapes and artificial facilities on the surface of the Earth. The resulting information can be used to compile maps of various scales for urban planning, traffic construction, water conservancy development, and the environment. It is used in many aspects such as protection. The state conducts surveying and mapping work on a regular basis to grasp geographical information in real time and conduct various regulations and plans. However, due to the cloud and fog weather in the Southwest China, optical surveying equipment is affected by the weather and cannot be continuously surveyed. Many regions cannot update geographic information in real time and become a “diarrhea”.

The airborne millimeter-wave radar surveying and mapping radar developed by 23 China Aerospace Science and Industry Institute No. 2 is not affected by the weather. It can work irrespective of rain, snow and snow, and it has a small and highly adaptable installation capacity. Domestic multi-type aircraft can carry flight and guarantee rapidity. React and capture the image of the measurement area smoothly.

In 2017, 23 of them cooperated with the surveying and mapping department of Guizhou to carry out radar geographic mapping application demonstrations in the mountainous areas of Guizhou, with good results. The first commercial flight survey in Chengdu was the result of Guizhou users fully affirming the effectiveness of 23 radars and drawing attention from the Chengdu surveying and mapping department.

The scope of this survey and mapping is more than 2,000 square kilometers. 23 radar teams are expected to use two sorties to complete the mission and initially form mapping image data. On the first flight on the 19th, the equipment was working properly and the data entered the rapid processing stage after the flight was completed. It is difficult to obtain a wide range of clear geographic information images because of the special geographical environment of the annual cloudy fog in the five southwestern provinces. The 23 radars are expected to “finish” this issue in the future. After Chengdu mapping, the institute will focus on exploring a larger market. We will continue to promote the industrialization of airborne radar mapping services.
