Electric vehicles will exceed the computer as the largest market for lithium-ion batteries

This week's report released by IHS, a key provider of information, products, solutions and services, states that by 2015, the electric vehicle market will exceed the notebook computer market and become the largest sales area for lithium-ion batteries.

HIS spokesperson Jonathan Cassell said sales of lithium-ion battery will reach 11.9 billion U.S. dollars in 2015, and laptop sales will be about 6.6 billion U.S. dollars. Of course, lithium-ion batteries will also be widely used in mobile phones, but they are not mentioned in the report.

At the same time, the report also pointed out that the price of lithium-ion batteries will rapidly decline in the next 10 years, which will be more conducive to the development of the electric vehicle market. The market research organization said that in the electric vehicle market, lithium-ion batteries will become the lowest cost rechargeable battery in 2020. At present, the cost of lithium-ion batteries is 2 to 3 times that of lead-acid batteries, nickel metal batteries, and sodium sulfide batteries.

According to HIS, overall, the revenue from all applications of lithium-ion batteries will reach 11.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2010, 31.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2015, and 53.7 billion U.S. dollars in 2020.
