Research by the giants
Tire World Network was informed that the companies participating in the gathering included the three co-chairs of TIP Goodyear, Bridgestone and Michelin, as well as Horse, Cooper, Hankook, Kumho, Pirelli, Sumitomo, Toyo ( Tong Yiou) and Youke Haoma.
The tire production of these 11 tire companies currently accounts for more than 65% of the world's total production. Therefore, by looking at the list of participants, you can know the gold content of the meeting.
At this meeting, these tire giants made a conclusion: the rubber particles produced by tire and road wear are not harmful to human health.
It is said that this conclusion was obtained after several years of research. They also published a study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) that the use of nanomaterials is more conducive to the sustainable development of society in tire manufacturing.
Relevant personnel of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development revealed that through the continuous monitoring of the atmospheric environment around the three major cities of Los Angeles, London and Tokyo, the rubber particles produced by tire and road wear have a very low content of 2.5 microns. It is even lower than the regulatory threshold for harmful human health set by countries around the world.
This means that when the tire is rubbed against the road surface, the PM2.5 produced is not enough to cause harm to the human body. To further prove this, the organization also conducted additional toxicity tests on rubber particles produced by tire and road wear.
At the same time, the OECD study shows that the use of nanomaterials in tires has a positive impact on society and the economy. In the study, they also outlined a best practice for the safe development and use of nanomaterials in tires.
Focus on sustainable development
With the rapid increase in global automobile production and possession, the sustainable development of the tire industry has increasingly attracted the attention of countries, including environmental impacts, market demand, industry challenges, and development prospects.
It is understood that the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) was established in 1995 by the former Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Environmental Industry Council, with headquarters in Geneva. Its purpose is to promote dialogue, exchanges and cooperation between enterprises, governments and social organizations in the field of sustainable development, and on this basis, promote the whole society to be more open and common prosperity.
The Council adheres to its commitment to sustainable development with its three pillars of economic growth, ecological balance and social progress, covering a wide range of areas including ecology, energy and climate. At present, its members have more than 190 companies in 35 countries, and its member output accounts for more than 50% of the global total output value.
The person concerned told Tire World Network that the activities of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development reflect the belief of “pursuing sustainable development and commercial mutual benefitâ€. This also includes the Tire Industry Project (TIP).
The WBCSD tire industry project has 11 multinational tire companies involved, and on this basis, the tire industry project working group was established. The project is mainly engaged in research on nanomaterials (in cooperation with the OECD), tire and road wear particles (tire manufacturers), scrap tires (evaluation and sharing of best practices, and the publication of an efficient scrap tire management system framework). The four brick countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China) cooperated in related projects.
In January 2014, at the invitation of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, China Rubber Industry Association participated in an exchange seminar on environmental protection issues of waste tires in Beijing.
In 2008-2013, TIP published papers on the management of scrap tires (2008) and the "Efficient Management System Framework (2010)", and discussed the situation of scrap tires with the BRIC countries.
