According to Tanzania’s “Citizen’s†news, an international consortium of four companies headed by Dubai’s Wentworth Company plans to invest US$2 billion in Tanzania to build a chemical plant that annually produces 1 million tons of methanol and 800,000 tons of urea. The project will use natural gas from Munatch Bay for production. The other three companies in the investment consortium are: Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), Cove Energy, and Maurel & Prom. Robert McCorben, chairman and chief executive officer of Wentworth, said that the methanol and urea production plant will begin construction within two years, with a construction period of 40 months. The preliminary feasibility study of the project has already begun. According to the information currently available, the annual demand for urea in Tanzania is 400,000 tons, but the country currently does not have a urea plant, and all urea used is imported. After the plant is completed, it will be the first urea plant in East Africa and Central Africa. It can not only meet the needs of Tanzania, but also provide urea for neighboring countries. At present, only South Africa has urea production plants in Central and Eastern Africa.
