Following the publication of the EU key metals study in June 2010, the EU will again release a report on rare earths and key metals in the coming months.
The key research report focuses mainly on 41 minerals, and classifies 14 as key minerals and advocates for policy support. The 14 kinds of mineral raw materials are: yttrium, yttrium, cobalt, fluorite, yttrium, ytterbium, graphite, indium, magnesium, barium, platinum group metals, rare earths (including 17 rare metals of lanthanum, thorium, and lanthanum series), and Tungsten.
At the Key Metals Investment Symposium in Vancouver, Jaakko Kooroshy, a researcher at the Hague Center who is working on the strategy report, said: "We are currently conducting extensive information investigations and the report will be released in the coming months."
Kooroshy said that in the EU report, rare earths are seen as the minerals with the greatest supply missing risk and high economic importance.
He also said: "The final version has yet to be integrated and the feedback from member states has not yet been fully submitted. Germany has submitted its proposal in advance, and France lags slightly. However, it has established a domestic supply chain for storage and rare metals compared to the United States and Japan. As far as government investment and other measures are concerned, the EU has not done anything in this regard."
