A few days ago, Russian joint shipbuilding at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg laid the keel for the "Ural" ship. It is reported that the ship is the second series of nuclear-powered icebreakers of the 22220 project. The ship's hull construction completely uses the shipbuilding steel supplied by OJSC Magnitogorsk Steel Company (MMK).
It is reported that MMK Steel is one of the world's largest steel manufacturers and Russia's leading steel mill, which supplies a total of 15,000 tons of steel for the ship. Previously, the project's flagship icebreaker "Arktika" and the first icebreaker "Siberia" also adopted the company's ship board.
More than 50% of the shipbuilding industry in Russia's shipbuilding industry is supplied by MMK Steel. In 2015, the company delivered 86,000 tons of steel to a Russian domestic shipyard. Russia's joint shipbuilding is the main customer of the company's shipbuilding industry. In 2011, the two sides signed a memorandum of strategic cooperation. In the first half of 2016, the company supplied approximately 17,500 tons of steel for combined shipbuilding.
The nuclear power icebreaker of the 22220 project is the world's largest ship of this class, and the above three ships will increase the fleet size of the Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker. The series has a water intake of 33,500 tons, a length of 173 meters, a width of 34 meters, a speed of 22 knots, and can break ice up to 3 meters in polar waters.
The project's flagship ship "Arktika" was launched on June 16 this year. Other diesel-electric icebreakers that combine shipbuilding also use MMK Steel's ship plates.
