[China Instrument Network Instrumentation Enterprise] On April 25th, while Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technology contributed to the interconnection of workshop equipment and enterprise level, security was always a severe challenge. Today, IT systems often use firewalls to monitor security risks on IT networks. These IT firewalls do not recognize the industrial protocols used in the shop floor, which greatly reduces the ability to control the entire network. To this end, Cisco and Rockwell Automation jointly developed a deep packet inspection (DPI) technology that complies with industrial security application specifications.

Industrial firewalls with DPI technology effectively extend the visibility of the shop floor network. It supports the recording of communication patterns and provides important information needed for decision making under the protection of a series of security policies. Users can record data from any network connection or protocol (such as EtherNet/IP), including the source, destination, and associated applications of the communication data. In the past, only IT executives had such permission. Today, factory supervisors and IT executives can use this technology to more securely manage shop-to-business network communications.

Between the industrial area and the unit area in a plant-wide converged Ethernet (CPwE) architecture, a workshop application using DPI technology can instruct the firewall to reject a controller's firmware download. This prevents misuse of the firmware and helps protect the integrity of the operation. Only authorized users can perform download operations.

“When it comes to building connected companies, manufacturers and industrial companies are most concerned with shop floor security,” said Juergen Weinhofer, vice president of general architecture and technology at Rockwell Automation, “DPI technology from Rockwell Automation and the IT security industry. The leader, Cisco, has teamed up to combine the expertise of both companies in automation and information control to effectively help new and existing industrial control systems improve safety."

"With this new security feature, our combined product portfolio and architecture can help eliminate subtle vulnerabilities and security threats and bid farewell to seemingly safe illusions," said Doug Bellin, director of global industry at Cisco. "We can track all networks in real time." Connect and respond quickly in the event of a problem. This is another excellent example of a combination of best IT technology and best OT (operating) technology to solve practical problems."

Through Rockwell Automation's strategic alliance with Cisco, manufacturers can share proven best practices in IT security and apply them to the shop floor and industrial environment. DPI technology will be available in 2016 and will be fully deployed in Rockwell Automation and Cisco's industrial networking equipment.
